XAUUSD Gold Trading for Indian Traders: Sessions, Risk, Prop Firms and the Rules You Must Know
What moves gold, which hours matter in IST, how to size a position in XAUUSD, what to check before paying for a prop-firm challenge, and the RBI and tax questions every Indian trader should ask first.
Gold (XAUUSD) is one of the most traded instruments in the world, and one of the most popular with Indian traders who want to trade in the evening after work. It moves a lot, it reacts sharply to US news, and it punishes oversized positions. This guide covers the basics you need before your first trade, including the legal and tax questions that most videos skip.
What XAUUSD actually is#
XAUUSD is the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars. When the chart shows 2,400.00, one ounce costs $2,400. With most brokers, one standard lot is 100 ounces, so a $1 move in gold is $100 per standard lot, $10 per mini lot (0.10) and $1 per micro lot (0.01). Contract sizes differ between brokers, so always check the contract specification before you trade.
What moves the gold price#
- The US dollar: gold is priced in dollars, so a stronger dollar often pushes gold down, and a weaker dollar often lifts it.
- US interest rates and real yields: gold pays no interest. When yields after inflation rise, holding gold becomes less attractive, and the reverse.
- Inflation and risk: in times of fear (wars, banking stress, sharp stock market falls) traders often buy gold as a safe haven.
- Central bank buying: several central banks have been steady buyers of gold, which supports demand over the long run.
The hours that matter, in IST#
Gold trades almost 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday, but not every hour is equal. These times are approximate and shift by about an hour when Europe and the US change their clocks:
- Asian session (early morning IST): usually quieter, with smaller ranges.
- London open (around 12:30 to 1:30 PM IST): volume and volatility pick up.
- New York open and the London–New York overlap (around 6:00 to 9:30 PM IST): often the most active and the most volatile part of the day.
Big US data releases land in the Indian evening, often around 6:00 to 7:00 PM IST: the CPI inflation report, the monthly jobs report (Non-Farm Payrolls) and the US Federal Reserve's interest-rate decisions. Spreads widen and price can jump tens of dollars in seconds. Many professionals simply stay flat for a few minutes before and after these releases.
Position size: the step most beginners skip#
Gold's average daily range is large. A stop-loss of $10 is normal on an intraday setup. Use the same 1% rule as in any market:
- Your account is $1,000. 1% risk is $10.
- Your setup needs a $10 stop-loss.
- At 0.01 lot, a $10 move costs about $10. So 0.01 lot is the right size.
- Someone trading 0.10 lot on the same account and stop would lose $100, a tenth of the account, on one trade.
This is why so many small accounts disappear in gold: not because the analysis was terrible, but because the position was ten times too big.
Prop firms: what to check before you pay#
A proprietary trading (prop) firm sells you a challenge. You pay a fee, trade a simulated account under strict rules, and if you pass you may receive a share of the profits from a funded account. Before paying, read the rules line by line:
- Daily loss limit and maximum drawdown: is the drawdown static or trailing? Trailing drawdowns are much harder to survive.
- Consistency and news rules: some firms cancel profits made around news releases or from one oversized day.
- Minimum trading days, time limits and allowed instruments: check that XAUUSD and your trading style are allowed.
- Payout terms: how often, how fast, by which methods, and what has to happen before the first payout.
- Track record: how long the firm has existed, whether its rules are public and stable, and what traders say about actual payouts.
The legal and tax questions to ask first#
This is the part that matters most for Indian residents. Under FEMA, the Reserve Bank of India allows resident Indians to trade forex only in permitted currency pairs on recognised Indian exchanges, through SEBI-registered brokers. RBI also publishes an Alert List of unauthorised forex trading platforms and has warned that sending money abroad for margin-based forex trading is not allowed under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme.
Prop-firm challenges and payouts sit in a grey area that is still evolving. Please read RBI's notices yourself, check whether a platform appears on the RBI Alert List, and take advice from a chartered accountant or lawyer about your own situation before you pay any fee or receive any payout.
On tax, payouts and trading profits are commonly treated as business income and taxed at your slab rate, and you may need to keep books and file the right ITR form. Keep every invoice, statement and bank credit from the start.
A simple gold trading checklist#
- I know the contract size and the value of a $1 move for my lot size.
- My stop-loss is set and my position size follows the 1% rule.
- I have checked the news calendar for today.
- I am not trading in the minutes around a high-impact US release unless that is my written plan.
- I have checked the legal and tax position for myself, not from a social-media comment.
